Horse Study - Sorry for the wait
Here is the horse drawing I posted about a while ago, the quality is not great seeing as I don't have a good flat light. I will probably photograph it again when I have a cloudy day to do so.
Approx 5 hours spent on this drawing using charcoal pencils on steel grey color paper. The drawing is about 24"x24".

The Summoning
Here we are, finally finished my first fantasy painting. Directly below is the finished (for now) piece, I may detail out everything this summer. I spent around 6 hours on this, pretty long but practice will cut that time eventually. The textures you see on one of the WIP shots came from a photo I took of the bottom of a frying pan.
I encourage you to offer any feedback you have that would help the piece, I can improve quicker with critiques.

Will be up tomorrow or Thursday, it is complete at the moment but I want to get a critique before I post it here.

Blah
Quick update, still working with figures in my concept class. The giant guy's linework isn't finished yet. Got a few digital paintings that I will have finished by the end of this weekend, hopefully. Also, I still need to photograph my horse drawing. If all goes well I will have a lot of new work up here soon.
Also, I do end up putting costumes on these mannequins.

More Figures
More figure mannequins from imagination, for concept sketchbook class tomorrow. Next step will be to clothe them and add value/color. I am trying to get more and more exaggerated with some of the features but I am having difficulty with them reading properly. Will upload all of the mannequins I have clothed/colored once they're finished.

Back to Basics
Finally, getting to work with figures again, this time is a little different though. I am working completely out of my head and I must say it is extremely enjoyable. Not being bound by what I see in front of me I am realizing that I can have a lot of fun with how my figures look. Below are a few figures I drew in between classes yesterday, I rendered the big guy this morning for fun.
Also, I may have a horse rendering up here soon, drawing it with charcoal on toned paper so if you like traditional media you may enjoy this.

Photo-manipulation & Digital painting
Here is a just finished piece, a combination of various photo-manipulation effects and digital painting on top of a photograph I took of my mother. There are actually individual brush strokes over the entirety of the piece, however, I label it a photo-manipulation because I did not actually draw the shapes but simply traced over my photograph. Regardless, I feel the piece is successful enough to post it.

La Brea Tar Pits
Recently, I went to the La Brea Tar Pits in LA on a field trip for my Animal Drawing class. Our purpose was to analyze at least one of the skeletons on display and transform it into more simple 3-d forms. I did several quick studies of the various species that were on display but only took one to a more finished state.
I enjoyed the opportunity to marvel at the beasts of our past and it was very enjoyable to be able to understand the scale of these creatures. Walking under the tusks of a Mammoth was quite the humbling experience.

First Post - Introduction and classwork
Hello, my name is Jared Jones and I am an aspiring concept artist. After spending my first few semesters at a junior college not really knowing what I wanted to do I found myself in a drawing and composition class. After that course, I began taking more and more art classes until I got to the point where my entire schedule consisted of studio art. Two and a half years later I got accepted into Laguna College of Art and Design with a fairly substantial scholarship. That, more or less, is where I am at the point of this first post. I am a few weeks into my first semester at LCAD and I am enjoying virtually every moment of it.
I will be using this blog to post class and personal work, if you are interested in seeing my most recent work feel free to follow the blog as work will be posted here first.
Below is a digital painting done in photoshop using two brushes. Every part of it was painted free-hand, no copying or tracing was done. I have included the reference piece and a few WIP frames.
